The first recognition question: is your profession regulated?
Why the answer depends on the work you intend to do in Germany, not only the degree you hold.
Two people with similarly named degrees may face different recognition requirements in Germany. The decisive question is usually the profession they intend to practise and whether access to that profession or title is regulated by law.
What regulated means in practice
In a regulated profession, legislation sets conditions for practising the occupation or using its protected title. Doctors, nurses, teachers in state schools and certain architects are familiar examples, although the exact competent authority and conditions can vary.
Formal recognition is generally necessary before unrestricted practice. Language competence, health, reliability or specific professional permissions may sit alongside the qualification comparison.
For many non-regulated occupations, an employer can assess whether a foreign qualification suits a role. A formal statement or comparability assessment may still be useful for an employer, salary classification or immigration purpose, but it is not the same as permission to enter a regulated profession.
Start from the intended activity
Write down the tasks you expect to perform, the job title in the vacancy and the federal state where you plan to work. Then compare these with official occupational descriptions. Translating the title on your diploma word-for-word can point to the wrong German reference occupation.
An engineer working in an internal company role may face a different title question from someone who needs to use a protected professional designation. A psychology graduate aiming at research does not necessarily follow the route required for licensed psychotherapeutic practice.
Why location matters
Federal law governs some occupations; state law and state authorities shape others. Moving from Hesse to Bavaria during an application can therefore mean more than changing an address. Ask whether the file transfers, whether the authority remains competent and whether local requirements differ before making the move.
A sensible first check
Use official recognition portals to identify the occupation and authority, then confirm any ambiguous point in writing. Record the page date and retain the response. That small evidence trail is more useful than assumptions drawn from an acquaintance’s different profession.
